Beginning My Proposal

The past two weeks have involved exercises in mapping. The projects have ranged from using GPS to map walks, maps of observed cell phone and wireless reception, or other wireless devices. The projects ranged from hand drawn maps, 2D and 3D representations of data, to flash and quicktime interpretative animations of signal detection. I chose to create two 2D maps of itunes shared library use/users. The first map was created to examine various user names at particular times throughout the day. I was interested in the dialogue that was created though a username. I was also interested in seeing the volume of users throughout the day. My second map was investigating a moment in time by creating a random moment through the use of a random playlist generated from shared music.

From my first two assignments I have realized that I am interested in the sharing capabilities of wireless media. I'm interested in the mobile communities that digital media can create on an ad-hoc network. I would like to further examine the possible interactions that can take place in public spaces or how a user might use public space to communicate their personality.

At the moment I am interested in the idea of an individual being a moble broadcasting unit. I would first like to examine the possibilites of FM radio being used as an inexpensive tool for people to broadcast their narratives at a particular public site. One reason I chose FM was because of the ability to include all social classes. For further exploration I would like to examine the capabilities of blue tooth technology.

During my meeting with my professor, she reccommended that I look at the following sites to get my mind going.
